WILMINGTON, DE (January 4, 2016) – Sixty new AAA Safety Patrol members from three Milford elementary schools will be sworn in during a ceremony at Milford Senior High School, Wednesday, January 6 at 4 p.m. This will be a first for the Mid-Atlantic Foundation in Delaware – there has never been three elementary school Safety Patrols sworn in at the same time, in the same location. The Honorable William Hopkins, assigned to the Justice of the Peace Court in Sussex County, will swear the new Patrollers in. Town representatives, parents, and local police will be in attendance for the ceremony.
“It is gratifying to know the AAA School Safety Patrol program is being implemented today in the town of Milford and I applaud the 60 students who will join the ranks as leaders in their respective schools,” says Susan Meade-Beachell, Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education.
Last year, the Foundation started 16 new Safety Patrol programs in Delaware and 117 across the Mid-Atlantic region. There are 52 active school-based Safety Patrols in Delaware with an average number of 22 students serving in each.
The AAA School Safety Patrol Program is the largest safety program in the world with 635,000 Patrollers – 91,000 of them from 1,825 schools in the Mid-Atlantic region. The program has been praised by education and safety groups around the world for reducing injuries and fatalities among school children ages 5 to 14.
Since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol Program plays an important role in helping young students learn and fulfill leadership roles. The presence of a AAA School Safety Patrol wearing the familiar belt and badge is a nationally recognized symbol alerting motorists to drive carefully.
